Mogadishu — China has criticized a bid by Taiwan to establish diplomatic relations with Somaliland, the breakaway region of Somalia that announced its independence nearly 30 years ago. In a terse statement on Thursday, China's Embassy in Mogadishu rejected the deal, arguing it violated the One China policy for which Beijing is the sole representative of Chinese affairs abroad. The Chinese Embassy in Somalia censured the Taiwanese activities in seeking to establish external relations, saying, "Such activities remain illegal and will never be recognized by the Peoples' Republic of China." "There is one China in the world. Taiwan is part of China and the government of the PRC [People's Republic of China] is the sole legal government representing the whole of China." President asked not to sign “deadly” media bill into law Reporters Without Borders (RSF) calls on President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, also known as “Farmajo,” not to sign Somalia’s newly approved media bill into law because it would open the way for criminal prosecutions for ordinary press offences and would undermine efforts by the authorities in the past year to defend press freedom. Somali journalists will have good reason to be worried if Farmajo signs the media bill, which had been debated for the past two years. The final version, which was sneaked through the federal parliament, has many vague and draconian provisions. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemns the closure of one of the main independent TV channels in northwestern Somalia’s self-proclaimed independent state of Somaliland and the arrest of its editor. The attempts by Somaliland’s authorities to silence journalists are becoming increasingly frequent, RSF said. This week’s closure of Horn Cable TV in Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa, comes just two months after police inflicted similar treatment on another Hargeisa TV channel, Horyaal TV closing it down and arresting its president.Police from Somaliland’s Criminal Affairs Department arrived at Horn Cable TV’s headquarters at around 9 a.m., on 18 November, ordered its staff to shut it down, and arrested its editor, Abdikadir Saleban Asayr.
